Iit sure looks good on paper doesn’t it?  The truth is, as good as the benefits of owning and operating your own business seem on paper, the reality is that it is a lot of work to be successful at it.

Does that mean you shouldn’t want more? That you shouldn’t aspire to be your own boss and live the lifestyle you have always wanted on your own terms? Not in the least, in fact, there are hundreds of thousands of small business owners enjoying the ability to spend more time doing what they like while running a successful business. A typical day in the life of an owner/operator of a small business usually includes getting up very early so they can get a head start on their day. A cup of coffee is breakfast and then they are out the door, ready to take on whatever the new day brings them. Whether they work in an office, retail location or their business is mobile, the routine is still the same: arrive at the “office” and get busy. Not only do they have to run their business and service the customer accounts scheduled for the day, they also have to try to bring in new customers. This is the sustainability of their business and it offers them growth and, in the long term, more profits.

After working hard all day dealing with customers, vendors and maybe even some employees, they still have more work to do. If you work in an office, you have to clean it. If you operate a mobile trashcan cleaning service, you have to maintain your vehicle and the machinery that does the hard part for you.

Now that your customers are satisfied, your employees are happy and your vehicle and machinery are ready for another day, you can finally head home, see the wife and kids for a little bit and, after they are all asleep, put on your accountant glasses and take care of the books for the day.

Does this sound like a lot of work? It is, but if you ask anyone who owns and operates their own business what it’s like to be the boss, they will tell you there is no greater feeling in the world!
